Terrarium

This is my first time trying to build a terrarium. The bowl contains an English Sundew, a couple of Pinguicula growing on a pumice stone, and a bunch of Sphagnum Moss to cover the soil.

2/1/2026 - I have noticed that recently the sundew has not had as many water droplets on the tentacles. I did some research and given my setup, I think the most likely issue is that my sundew has not had a dormancy period. My understanding is that the non tropical sundews (like this English Sundew) need to have some period where they are in a colder climate and go dormant. Unfortunately, I am a bit late to this but I am still going to try and give it some dormancy so today I removed the pumice stone which has the pings on it and placed the rest of the terrarium out in the garage. I'm going to try and leave it for at least 8-10 weeks so we will check on it in April!

1/31/2026 - Today I cut the flower stem off and harvested the seeds. I did this by taking a clear plastic cup and shaking the flowers into the cup. This worked super well and I was able to capture a ton of seeds. They are super tiny seeds so I would highly recommend using a cup like this to make sure you don't lose too many. I am going to save most of them for now but I put a few into a damp paper towel and into a plastic bag to see if they will grow.

1/2/2026 - The sundew has grown flowers once again and this time I was much more careful! It has been so rewarding to see the flowers open one by one. You can also see that the sundew is much larger than before so I think it is pretty happy under the grow lights in my new plant cabinet.

1/17/2025 - I recently found out that I should not be using regular tap water to water these plants as they can apparently cause mineral build up to occur. So I removed everything from the glass bowl and repotted with fresh soil. The sundew was looking quite bad (mostly brown colored) but after a couple weeks has looked much better.

7/11/2024 - Well I did some more research and it looks like that was a flower stalk. I say was because I accidentally burnt it off by having the grow light be too close to it. Hopefully it will try to flower again at some point and then I will know to be more careful.

6/7/2024 - things are looking pretty good. The pings are growing nicely and the sundew has an interesting growth on one of the tenticles. I believe this is the start of a flower stalk.
